Subject: Re: What are you going to plant

Near Richmond, IN
Seed Corn can be carried over fairly easily. The main thing is to keep it out of the exteme heat and dry. Most of you buy carryover seed every year and a lot of it has never seen cold storage. Seed corn, wheat and most small seeds like alfalfa, clovers, etc. but not grasses, will carryover very well. Soybeans vary greatly from year to year. Some years good quality soybeans will carryover well and others they won't but the biggest problem with soybeans is that they can loose a lot of vigor in the last few months (days) right before planting, ie: March April, May. Some very large companies may have some of their seed corn stored in cold storage but most of all the smaller ones don't and there is no problem with it at all. The biggest problem with it is heat ie: above 90 for extended periods. Most of the cold storage is used for foundation seed corn which has a much higher value and is carried over for up to five years. But I'm sure you all will buy some seed that is at least one year old and many times two to three years old. But I'm also sure the dealer will never tell you that.
