Subject: RE: Cover crop suggestion after DC beans

Trenton, KY
I think our only option is cereal rye or triticale as Steve said, because of the timing of planting. For several years we have been been drilling wheat after we cut dc beans in our draws and places where water will run, and it has worked good for erosion control. Last year we had to fix a tile line hole about March 10 that was straddling the edge of where the drill ran sowing the cover crop wheat and the tile line was down at 30" deep and when dad dug the tile line up with the loader you could look up one side of tile line and not see any live roots hanging through the tile line and the other end for as far as you could see with a bright flashlight had good looking live roots hanging through the roof of the tile. There was probably 4 inches of top growth. I think that over time we are bound to slowly improve the soil structure and raise our organic matter levels.
