Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning. | packerfan - 3/6/2013 05:37 I can't imagine ever being 'comfortable' enough to sit down and take pictures. Bill, the human animal adapts well and the level of perceived danger is a sliding scale. In other words, you get used to it and relax when the occasion presents itself. Looking back through my collection of pics, it strikes me that we are always half naked and shoeless. A guy might get the impression that we were always like that, but more often than not we wore boots, shirts, helmets, carried a pack and held a loaded weapon. Not many pics of those occasions because circumstances didn't warrant relaxation right then and the cameras stayed tucked away in their plastic bags inside the backpacks. As for being scared, brave, fearless, mean, or etc., again everyone handles it differently. I've never considered myself overly brave but can honestly never remember being afraid. I handled bad situations by thinking of ways to maximize my survival while still performing my duties. There were times that I did a lot of heavy thinking though and maybe even told myself a lie or two. Amazing how even a two or three inch high hump in the ground between you and incoming fire can feel safe. As the situation escalated, I'd just think harder. Luck played a significant part on the success of my methods though. |
