PVP is Plant Variety Protection. Most commerically sold varities are PVP with the USDA. This protection allows the variety to be protected for 18 years I believe. This means no saved seed.
Most commerically sold varities are also Patented with the US Patent Office. Which gives a little broader protection.

This protection was originally 17 years, moved to 18 years and now is 21 years on newly patented lines. Seed originators would also delay paper work on applications for 2-3 years. When a variety recived it's patent, the life of the patent would be from the time of approval. When the patent was increased to 21 years, they also used the date of application as the start date to eliminate the procrastination.

Oat, Wheat, Soybean, corn, cotton, etc.... all are commonly PVP'd and patented.
