I'm a drill guy, its odd in my area (southern South Dakota), seems every year someone goes out and gets a drill or rents a drill because they think that is the answer, at the same time someone who has used a drill goes to a planter because that is the answer. Whether or not it is i'm not sure. However in all studies I've read the further north you go the narrower they need to be, because they will grow quicker, and canopy quicker because they are fighting for sun.

So in your shoes drilling is by far the better option, for others I think it just depends on geography, land and personal style
