Subject: Re: Units of measure

Colby, Kansas
The volumetric bushel is not in use today (in grains, perhaps it still is in vegetables/produce I have no idea). I don't know why this is one of the most misunderstood concepts that resurfaces on here. The term bushel in the grain trades is a measure of mass based upon a standard conversion from pounds, 60lb = 1 bu of wheat or beans, 56 lbs = 1 bu of corn or sorghum.

weight / standard = bushels, it has absolutely nothing to do with volume.

I would have no problem reporting yields in lbs/ac or cwt/ac, thats how grain yields are reported in West Texas, I assume its because thats what guys are used to in the cotton business. It would make nutrient removal calculations etc. simpler.

We are not going to change our land measurement system in this country so yields by nature will probably remain on standard units also, how stupid if we measured yield in kg per acre. There is nothing worse than mixed units.
