I'm always confused when someone in the US says they spray 4 oz of a product. Is that 4 fluid oz (1/2 cup) or 4 oz by weight (1/4 lb). And why is pound abbreviated lb?

It depends on whether the product you're spraying is a liquid or a solid. If it's a liquid it's volume, if it's a solid it's weight.

Pound and lb both come from the latin phrase, libra pondo, which means "a pound by weight" Although their pound was lighter than ours, about 329 grams.
