And why is pound abbreviated lb?
The French again, King Charlemagne established the livre/sol/denier currency over the Holy Roman Empire, the English took their abbreviations from the equivalent Latin words, and somehow lost the most signicant part of "libra pondo", keeping only the word for "weight", not for "libra". Worked on the weight unit too, since a pound sterling was one pound in weight of silver. |
