Are spiral cells the way to go for truck batteries?

I'm not really sure what the deal was with the big old 6v's.  We've started lots of engines with a single automotive 12v where there used to be a pair of those, and generally speaking the single group 24 will give better performance.  This is plain cheap car batteries I'm talking about, not spiral wound, and things we have used them in include my old 7720 which would start reliably in the field at below freezing on the single car battery.
