Subject: Plant Oats, NOT Rye or Wheat

SE IA
Plant Oats.

Do not plant Rye or Wheat.

Finally, someone planting a covercrop that has a goal in mind! If you are after only fall grazing, the oats will give you the most tonnage. The rye and the wheat will only tiller along and won't grow very tall until it goes through dormancy which brings forth the stem elongation after the dormancy. Oats will continue to grow in height until they winter freeze/kill. If you cannot get them planted early enough after the sb harvest, then fly them on when beans turn yellow. (it is going to take some rain). If you want a little more diversity mix in some forage turnips (ones that grow a lot of leafy matter and less root mass).

Thats my opinion especially if you are going to corn the following spring, you won't have to worry about spring burndown. Also may have to watch what herbicides you put on your soybeans this year if you are doing any radishes as they are extremely sensitive to all chemicals.
