Subject: Re: Rolling corn ground

SW Ontario
We are set up to pull a roller behind cultivater ahead of planting. Our normal program is to only go across with this once before the planter and the roller helps us accomplish this by evening out the surface and providing a firm level field for the planter to run.
However we have some rules. We don't cultivate deep (aim for 2-3") and if it is a backwards spring and if ground conditions are borderline we don't pull the roller. Almost always, our corn is following a previous years wheat crop and we have a fair bit of residue on the surface. This helps if we do get some heavy rain after planting to reduce the chance of crusting and emergence issues. From what I have seen, this info only applys to rollers, IMO sprocket packers or other similar units pack the soil too much for this application.
