Subject: RE: another sunflower question

Central South Dakota
We plant 21000-23000 seeds in the ground. Flowers usually have around a 90% germ so a 19,000 to 21000 final stand count. 200,000 to 250,000 seeds will be in a bag usually. 26-27k is way to high a population IMHO. We shoot for 2200-3000 # of flowers an acre. Use the e-sets and your stand will be a lot better than just using standard plates. IMHO I try not to plant a flower that isn't express or liberty link tolerant if I can help it. Gives you more options on weed control, especially if your fighting pigweed. Don't think flowers are like beans and use sharpen in front of flowers as a burndown, you'll be pissed when you see the results. Spartan charge is our prefered choice @ a 5-6 oz use rate/acre. If you want to see some flower yield, use some fertilizer, some guys think they can scrounge alot of deep N, which they can, but flowers take a lot out of your ground too. Get your spartan on early and then spray a day or two in front of the planter with a clean up pass. Good luck, hope this helps.
