WC MN | Nobody will show up for less than $12. Not even high school kids. More and more things are mechanized in the fruit grower world. It's almost to the point where machine harvesting is cheaper than hand harvesting. Even for wine grapes. We usually figure about $200/acre in labor to pick grapes. I could almost justify a machine harvester for my small operation. That $200/acre pays the equipment bill but doesn't pay for fuel and a guy operating it. Factor in speed and not worrying about lining a crew of guys up and it's about a wash now. Labor will only go up so mechanization will be the future. | |
