cropsey, il 61731 | Not to get too 'crop talky' here, but roundup is very effective on small weeds. A two pass program where you spray only small weeds (like germination to maybe 1") will likely always be pretty effective - small weeds are not very defensive. However (really big HOWEVER), getting that timing right every year is just about impossible. I'm small acres and was pretty successful until hogs drew my attention and time away a little too much. No way can you count on a custom guy to get it done either.
We got off very easy at first as so much of the weed spectrum was pretty much very susceptible and could be killed at about any stage of growth. Those plants are gone and what's left needs to be killed early which is basically the same deal with about every other herbicide (is anything labelled for 2' tall giant ragweed besides a weed hook?). As far as I can tell fields still look pretty clean if guys were able to manage it well and give it a little help where it needs it (far from total disaster). Perhaps some of the anti roundup sentiment is being helped a little by other herbicide companies that were almost shut out of the business. Roundup forces prices of other chemistry's much lower and now there are good preplant and tank mix options that make a roundup program really shine (ie. larger weed spectrum, residual). Maybe it's ok to hate monsanto and they certainly seem to come off as a little too worried about getting every dime at times, but it was a good idea, they made it work and it changed agriculture. Mice that are susceptible to tumors are still susceptible to tumors so it doesn't apparently fix that problem. | |
