That's right, Mcupps, night crawlers are surface feeders with vertical burrows. They are the ones that really transform your soil. The smaller red earth worms live at more shallow depths and are considered horizontal feeders which do eat at shallow underground levels. They don't tend to have as dramatic effects on the soil qualities as the night crawlers do.
