Subject: Our dryer salesman talked us

Central Illinois
out of a 10,000 bu hopper bin and into a 42' six wide ring flat bin (29,000) with power sweep and a size smaller dryer. 20 hp fan on the bin, and we start at 30% moisture, putting wet corn on the floor with a power spreader. Until the corn gets to 20%, we will run the sweep around once a week, and haven't lost any corn. Also, it is a regular bin, and we have never crinkled any side sheets. That was in 1988. Looking back, the two mistakes we made were we should have made the wet bin at least three rings taller, and gone with at least one size bigger dryer, instead of the size smaller.

Old engineers rule of thumb still works. Plan on the biggest size you will ever need...........then double it. When we quite laughing when we first heard this, we did make it 25% larger. Five years later, we found the error of our ways. We have improvised some things, but raising that bin four rings will cost $40,000, and a new dryer will be $200k and change. Not something I am real excited about at my age.
