SC Sask | Had a 1688 that had a spring tensioner let go, aux oil pump was surging and generally not work well at all. It was 11 at night and rain called for the morning. We were half done combining lentils and had to get them off before the rain or they would lose 2 or 3 grades. We found all of the pieces in the dark, welded the rod back together and reassembled finished the lentils. We ordered the new parts the next day, but left the jimmy'ed tensioner in place for the rest of the season, and replaced once the combine got back to the shop.
New part lasted all of 80 acres the next year, we probably got the tension wrong on the nut, or forgot to double nut.....anyway this time we couldn't find some key pieces of the assembly so onto plan B. we got one of the narrow web style ratchet straps from the farm truck and made our own tensioner which worked really well and stayed on for the rest of the season. During the off season we sent the combine over to a neighbor who dose combine maintenance, he to one look at our setup and had to change it out cause it just bugged him.
Next his fix only lasted 10 ac.....so the ratchet strap went back on the combine, had to replace the strap half way through the season to a heavier strap, but it still working fine. | |
