NC IA | That reminds me of another story.... Years ago was putting a head gasket on an old Massey dozer with a perkins. Had head studs with long fine-thread nuts. During assembly I clumsily dropped one of those nuts down a push-rod hole. Clunk clang ding. I couldn't see any sign of it down the hole with a flashlight. All I could picture was that nut wedged on a cam lobe or something. Like your excavator situation, the dozer had a big cast belly, with just a hole to access the drain plug. To pull the pan would have required pulling the engine. Anyway, I was grasping as straws and pulled the drain plug and fished around for a few minutes with a magnet, with no success. A short bit later, the 12 yr old neighbor kid stopped by. I explained to him what I had done. He said, "let me try, with the magnet." I thought "yeah right." But let him go at it. Ten minutes later he had the nut fished out the drain plug hole. | |
