| Years and years ago, dad and I were overhauling an HG317 engine (a/k/a "boat anchor") off of a John Deere 95 combine. After we'd reassembled the engine and placed it back on the mounting brackets behind the grain tank, we tightened the motor mounts and felt great about our accomplishment.
However when we started to clean up the shop a few minutes later...
Dad picked up a discarded rod bearing and looked it over very closely. He put it down and picked up another, examining it. Then he remarked "Look at these bearings." I looked at them, and they seemed ok to me...and that was the problem: they looked good, with no signs of wear. Dad thought we'd mistakenly put the old rod and main bearings back in the engine. So...we pulled the engine back off, dropped the pan, and took a look at the rod and main bearings. They were new. The old bearings just hadn't any signs of wear (about the only good thing about those POS engines). | |
