Subject: RE: Dutch, what about the plow?

sunnyside WA.
We plow for a couple of Reasons. One reason is that we own a dairy and have to spread straw manure on our fields in the spring. If you don't work it in deep the corn will not germinate well in those areas. We also have to clean till to irrigate some of our fields. We have to ditch irrigate some of our smaller fields, and the trash will plug up the ditch and make it jump to another row. We have tried just disc ripping, but the water will find the soft trench from the ripper and go where it wants to. We don't plow all of our piviot fields, some of those we can just disc rip. As far as hard pan, the plow does make a plow pan in the soil, that is why we deep rip in the fall to go break up that layer and let the winter moisture go in deep. We do have to work our ground alot but it is a very clay type of ground that will seal up hard if not worked up well. We live in a desert and have to irrigate everthing. So whatever it takes to get the water in the ground is what you do. Brad
