Back in the '80s the exchange rate allowed Deere to have tractors built in Japan and have them shipped here cheaper than making them here. These were the smaller 50 series tractors built by Yanmar, some of the best Deere tractors around IMO. WE have a 1650, great on fuel, just as much power as our 2950 and still starts in any temp and purrs like a kitten. I'd assume they did the same with stand alone engines. Only thing on our 1650 that is a dead giveaway it wasn't made here is the Japanese writing on the oil fill plug. AFAIK Deere/Yanmar still have the engine relationship, not sure if any tractors are still built by them.
