| It needs 43% more volume for normal combustion. So the jets or injectors need to be that much larger. The higher octane will let it run leaner than gasoline without pinging, but not enough to compensate for that need at full load (high speed and full throttle).
When trying it, one ought to monitor exhaaust gas temperature before the catalytic converter and back off the throttle when the temperature starts to soar.
I suspect that in some conventional engines the injectors accidentally do have enough volume capacity, just the engine hasn't been certified by its maker to EPA and CARB for running on E85. But I'm unwilling to burn holes in pistons finding out which one is isn't.
