Fruita CO | Pokey, a cuber is sort of confined to a dry climate, & alfalfa. The hay has to be dead dry, then a little water is sprayed on the windrow as it's picked up. The natural gummy stuff-I forget the correct name-on the aldalfa stem is what sticks the cube together. If there's not enough alfalfa, the cuber will just make a "turd" that won't even hold together in the wagon. I did the maintenance on a bunch of 425 JD cubers when they were the rage here, (W CO), they were a pretty cool machine. 6V71 Detroits, about 215 Hp as I remember, & that die ring uses all of it. Once you hear one, you remember it. The die ring runs at 60 rpm, so that Detroit "snorts" 60 times a minute...a lot of operators wore ear muffs...you kinda started a walk down memory lane here...
