Only a handful are homozygous black. I'm trying to breed up to 'purebred' Hereford blood, so to do that we are breeding to Red Hereford cows, and on that mating there is no way to be homozygous.

I like to pick the upper end of bulls (steer the bottom half) before testing for homozygous on the ones that have the potential to be (both parents black). Most of these are in the 5/8 to 3/4 Hereford blood. The homozygous test varies from $15 to 25, depending on time of year and which company you use. I like to use the ear tag and it runs $2.50 a tag.
