Faunsdale, AL | It's a management decision whether your power will be reliable or not. I'm not talking about catastrophic outages, but the kind of every other week things you described. We are on a local REA coop here and close to areas served by Alabama Power (who generates most and "wheels" all of the power our REA buys. I don't know how they compare now, but about 20 years ago, we were in the same situation, every afternoon thunderstorm would put the power out for an hour or two. Then they started hiring a right of way clearing and trimming contractor and upgrading lines. Now we very seldom loose power.
After one of the hurricanes, we had trees leaned over being supported by the new aluminum lines they had just installed . A lot quicker to trim the limbs away, let the tree fall on down to the ground and the lines snap back where they belonged than to splice the old copper/steel wire that was replaced. Oh, our power costs have risen some. Not sure how much of that is passed on cost from the generating co or is because of increased operating cost. They have also recently gone to electronic meters which report automatically to the substation. This is an effort to reduce the theft of power as well as wire. | |
