I've done the boot method once. It is quite a hair raising experience trying to hold a mad tom in a boot, and a sharp knife with the other. Just kinda sat on the boot with the business end hanging out. But really I didn't see much ill effects from it afterward. I tried to make as small of an incision as possible, work the nuts out and snip snip. A few hours later he, uh, "it" was coming around wanting attention. No hard feelings at all. And he quit spraying every thing. We have two neutered toms and they do a good job still on the mice, because they are around all the time, not roaming the countryside.
