I'm not sure a lot of it even has to do with anything relevant today. Remember, there were people killing other people over differences in Christian religions less than 100 years ago(the Christeros rebellion) and there is some evidence that nearly the same thing went on between the Hutu's and Tutsi's. When people hold beliefs deeply, they get jumpy.
