Not to defend a sloppy job, but it really doesn't take much wheat losses at all to make it look like a huge loss. I'm not happy with the looks of our wheat ground after we run the stripper head and then get some rain...it looks really green. But counting the kernals per square foot behind the combine tells me I am losing a bushel or so per acre...more that I would like, but not a bad percentage on 70 or 80 bu. wheat. I think we had less losses with the conventional header in wheat, but I have to consider the other advantages...longer straw sells better, easier to plant double crop beans, faster harvest when conditions are right for better test weight...you get the idea. There are always trade-offs, and we each can logically come to different conclusions about what is most important based on our own set of conditions.
