Subject: Re: small square baler John Deere vs New holland

Appomattox/Fredericksburg, VA
We run NH575's now. Used to run Deere 348's but the pickup on the NH is 11 inches wider than the Deere. This makes a big difference for us as we bale a lot of straw behind small grain. The Deere pickup just isn't wide enough to bale behind a 30 foot head. The NH has all it wants behind our 20 foot head with a deflector on the combine. I tried every year at intro and other meetings when I worked at the dealership to get Deere to widen the pickup but they claim the market isn't big enough to change things. They will continue to get left in the dust. I liked the Deere design better with the auger, you can see more of what's going on. Deere requires less power to run. NH has updated the flywheel/PTO clutch design from the 575 models. Just like a combine, no matter the color if tuned correctly, both will make a good bale.
