| I'm new to the forum. I grew up on a typical old Maine farm, raising most of what we ate, haying, raising a few oats, etc. I left farming to make a living, but have always wanted to farm again. Now I am at the point where I can afford to farm some. I guess you could call me a hobby farmer because I still work at a job. I am trying to raise a mix of grains to feed my flock of hens. I did some research into the nutritional needs of poultry and figured that I could keep them laying and healthy on a mix of oats, corn, buckwheat, and sunflower. I raised each of those crops this past year with mixed results. The oats were easy, corn did not do well in the dry summer, buckwheat came ok, birds and squirrells got almost every kernel of sunflower. I did more research and found that Canola has many of the same nutrients as sunflower, so this year I want to try some. Would I need to furrow the canola before I combine it or is it easily direct-combined? Does anyone have any advice about what I am trying to do? Am I approaching this wrong? I am open to any suggestions. Thanks. | |
