Old phrase... A holstein will eat you out of house and home. fed them for years, until it was hard to find crossbreds. A wise nutritionist explained it this way... The genetic selection process to produce milk has created a turbo enhanced 8 cyl engine. All is well for the female needs and wants. But, for the steer, we only need a 6 cyl econo model to lay down muscle. No one has figured out how to limit the growth of the guts (engine) for the lowered demands. So if you put it in front of them they will eat it. And if you don't they'll eat the wood off the barn or fences. If you give hay in bunk free-choice and corn in self-feeder then beware the bloaters. They fill up on one or the other, and disregard eating a balanced diet. Tmr much safer method, and implant, and control feed to make $. IMHO.
