Southern MN | I recently started ridge tilling, about 5 years ago. It was being done by others in my neighborhood, so I had experience around to help me out. I did it because I work full time off the farm and wanted to get away from all the conventional tillage which took a lot of time and horse power. I make one pass with a 6 row cultivator in the corn, that's it, but I'm looking for a 12 row cultivator to make that go faster. I plant a 3pt mounted 12 row planter. My fertilizer is deep banded in the fall by a neighbor. This year I'm adding RTK steering with the hopes of making the cultivating more enjoyable as well as the other benefits of RTK. As far as yields, I don't think they went down or up from conventional tillage and it doesn't matter all that much to me if they varied 5% either way. Sometimes what's considered best for an operation isn't the highest number of bushels per acre. | |
