Thanks for the compliments! Yes the top is 1/2". Cost wise it was cheaper to make it this way versus buying a 3/4" or 1" piece of flat 4'x4'. I built the frame with 4"x4"x3/16" tubing. The tubing came from a IH press drill hitch. All together I have about $600 into the metal. Heck the vise was $500. I made a deal with my dad-I build/pay for the table and he buys a good vise.

Yes the whole top is 2" thick. I used a hydraulic jack to push the 1/2" plate down tight to the stringers. When I started the plate had a slight bow but we were able to get it pressed into position.

I don't think I am going to add a catch pan. I am planning on sheeting the bottom with perforated steel. I figure that way I can blow everything off and just sweep up under the bench.
