| Am searching my data base for comparable years in terms of rationing domestic feed use. Just for an example, in 1996...the beef cow kill increased 15% in the 1st quarter, 34% in the 2nd quarter & 32% in the 3rd quarter....for the January thru June period, our intended heifer replacements declined 4.1% and actual replacements declined 4.7%.
However, our cow herd is slightly lower in number than in 1996.
Non-feds can cause a sticky pricing situation as I learned from the 1974 fiasco through making some real money by 1979...big numbers in the feed lot are not bothersome to me...when the non-feds show up..the grinders can more easily get lean beef supplies without reaching as much into fed supplies. | |
