If you do it primarily for short term economics, you are done before you start. If you don't 'believe in it', you are also done before you start.

I don't know, about 10 years ago a number of guys got into organic hay production here purely for short term economics. If the goal isn't to make money, why would anyone do it? It was good, and very profitable. Therefore, a lot of guys got into it, and for a couple years now it hasn't been much of premium. Those that got in early are mostly back into other conventional crops now anyway. Was good for them, and they'd didn't 'believe' in anything other than looking for a little extra extra cash.
Some of the soil here, with a crop like alfalfa is very well suited to organic production. On ground that has been in potatoes for many years, the fertility is so high you can 'coast' through 10 years of alfalfa pretty easy. Not saying I'd want it done on my ground, but it is possible. | |
