| This is exactly what I was going to say:
"Find someone in your area that is doing it well and ask lots of questions!"
Shoot me an me an email with your county and I can help you track down some organic farmers near you.
you don't need to be a "true believer" but if you are only considering organics for the money... you should probably not proceed.
2 years ago I attended a field day at one of the largest organic farms in IL and the farmer said something that I will always remember... "It takes a high level of SKILL AND WILL to be successful in organics"
Do you have above average farming skills (e.g., mechanical, problem solving, business management)? (You don't need to answer publicly but if your answer is no, you should probably not proceed)
What role do local retail agronomists play in your decision making today? If you like to solve problems and make your own decisions, organic might be a good fit for you... in organics there is often no one you can call for a rescue treatment prescription.
Last, do you currently have livestock or are you located near any large CAFOs with surplus manure?
