NW Iowa | Honestly, it's the best farming/business decision I've made. I grow both food and feed grade crops and have hardly ever found it difficult to market my production.
While I don't invite competitors to this market niche :-) ... it can work. There are times of disappointment, but it is also be extremely rewarding when yields meet and exceed my conventional farming counterparts. Not that I wish them ill, it's just a sense of accomplishment that we can achieve the same yield goals with less input costs, better soil health, and receive a healthy price premium for doing so.
That all said, it's the Lord that giveth the increase...
BTW, we grow mostly corn, soy and oats with a few odd-ball crops now and then... flax, popcorn, dark red kidney beans, wheat, etc. Not to mention various cover crop species that most folk in my part rarely if ever see... radishes, turnips, fava beans, winter peas, vetch. Keeps the neighbors talking!
Not sure I answered your question... Find someone in your area that is doing it well and ask lots of questions!
Best wishes... | |
