Michigan.
I'll second the Kinnetico.

We had a Culligan Gold unit in our old house. That thing ate 50lbs of salt a month due to the interval of regeneration.
It crapped a couple controllers that were covered under warranty, and had to be re-set after every weekly(lousy service in that area) power outage, and in general was a pain in the butt.

Put a Kinnetico in the new house. Same water consumption rate, but have only used 60lbs of salt since May.
The price difference was 40 bucks...INSTALLED. Best part is no electronics, and nothing to wear out or fail.

Regular Softeners are pretty much all the same with some variation on valves and timers.
No point in paying more between brands, but the Kinnetico IS actually a different approach that works.

I especially like the fact that regeneration happens as water is used, so there is no 2AM cycling, or regeneration happening when I'm in the stupid shower because the power blinked out and I didn't notice.
