We have always done a much simpler cake (but yours sounds delicious and worth trying)--just a white cake and with three bright pennies rather than beans. Friends who had lived in Louisiana said Kings cake there was more of a coffee cake, decorated with brightly colored sugars. and was a daily tradition until Mardi Gras. Celebrating Epiphany is a good way to end the Christmas season, which we start with St. Nicholas day (Dec. 6) and candy in the children's shoes. I still get the singular honor of taking down the tree.
