For many, it's called experience. You can crunch numbers, create and follow spread sheets, run yourself ragged with projections, and still fail. Some have enough experience personally, as well draw on trusted collective experience, and do the big numbers in their head. But whatever twists your axle and makes you happy is what you need to keep doing.
