Most are so hung up on the plant itself, the above ground portion, and most of those ideas can add up to a couple bu. difference. Last I checked most of what is happening above ground is directly related to whats going on below ground. Lack of drainage,lack of air. Figure out how to control compaction, and get excessive water out of the soil so it can breathe.
Plants need something like 16 different nutrients, does your soil have adequate amounts of all, are you trying to build the ones that are lacking?
