+1 on the 3-fers. Buying locally raised, bred older cows with a heifer calf at side off of the farm or ranch seems to me is one of the best ways to start a herd if you haven't just won the lottery. You are getting a cow that knows how to have a calf, her daughter who will probably turn out like her dam, and one in the hanger so you don't need to mess with a bull right away.
