Missouri | Do what you think is right. What is "publicly acceptable" has never been a good barometer for what is a good idea.
I have twins. Love 'em to pieces. Never once carried them into the gas station. How are you going to carry anything out with both hands full? Gas stations have windows. If you can see them, you're supervising better than if you were at home and they were in the other room where you can't see them. If you are watching them, and are within less than 195 feet (60 meters), then they are not unattended.
A few things I did when doing this:
Car never left running, keys never left in it (what if jr. can reach the power lock switch?)
Kids were either young enough to be strapped in a car seat, or old enough to understand to stay put. At that in between age, if they can open the door, they can step into traffic.
Doors were never locked. You don't want to accidentally lock your keys in the car. Also, if something happens to me, I want someone to be able to help the kids without having to smash a window or wait for a locksmith.
There's just not a reason to lock the door. Kidnappers just don't snatch random kids. They are at less risk from a random kidnapping then they are from being killed by YOUR driving on the way home from the gas station. It is illogical, unfounded paranoia to think otherwise. | |
