Since the bearings are mounted with the taper facing inward it would seem to me that if the shaft were to warm up and expand the bearings would become more loose. The upper shafts like the transmission driveshaft and the countershaft the bearings are tapered out word and if those shafts were to get longer from heat expansion the bearings would become tighter. I am going to assume that John Deere made a mistake when they put together the instructions for assembling That transmission. The way they described finding the preload for the wheelbearings didn't make much intuitive sense either.
