| I think at one level you are both right. We are Monday morning quarterbacking a desperate mothers cries for help. We don't know if or where the dad was, or to what extent the extended family was there. It's possible that the child has been ill for a long time and his symptoms were blown off as normal. If she is a single mom, the stress on normal people has to be overwhelming. It would be very easy to dismiss mental issues as normal childhood rebellion if the only parent was tired beyond words at the end of the day. Add in that the boy seems to be very smart and you have a possible combination of mental illness and genuine behavior issues. I wouldn't want to walk a mile in her shoes, but I think society needs to be willing to let her take a break and some serious medical treatment needs to be done.
