Subject: Re: silage to cows

west central Iowa
If cows aren't used to silage, start them with a little and slowly increase #/hd/day. I feed 1/2# of 40-20 pellets per head with silage the last trimester. I would rather mix a little mineral in feedwagon than give free choice mineral. The three month old calves will learn from there mothers and soon be eating out of the bunk also. The key to feeding silage is putting something with it to slow it in the cow, long enough to get some good out of it. We mix dry ground brome hay or corn stalks with the silage.
