Texas/New Mexico Stateline | John answered much more thoroughly than I will, but I think in general most politicians think they are doing the right thing. They think transferring wealth from the savers and makers to the wasters and takers will make things more fair/equal/secure/whatever Yes I even believe stupid people like Pelosi and Reid are trying to do what they think is the right thing. If they can make millions while in power, they think that is their reward for making things fair/equal/secure/whatever for everybody.
