Ontario | You say that you have one pasture that you "need to fill". Could you just space out your existing cows? What I mean is reduce your stocking rates, and gain days on pasture/reduce the amount of stored feed that you need. Last year I ran a scenario where I just changed that number, went from losing money to being profitable. Pasture is still the cheapest feed source, the longer you can have cows get their own feed the better. Like that napkin math, you can make more money with less if you have fewer costs. Don't know if that is a feasable option for you or not, but a thought.
Have you also considered the possibility of custom grazing? If you have available pasture, but not the livestock or capital to purchase them it can be a good option. Don't know if anyone does it in your area. Background calves for a feedlot and get paid so much per pound gained on the lot. Lot lower risk for you when you are still starting out. | |
