Subject: Heifer calves back in with the cows

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I usually wait 8 weeks after weaning to put the heifer calves back in with the cows. My vet says it can be done as early as 2 weeks.

It is right about 6 weeks now and I had the calves in the corral for a weigh-in so I figured might as well try to speed things up a bit. The weather is supposed to turn and it seemed like a good time. I watched them for awhile, no sign of trying to suck. Cows' bags look pretty dried up.

Thought the heifer calves would go running back to mama but they didn't. The calves stayed together in a very tight group. Interesting to watch the social interaction as the calves eased back toward the cows at the hay feeders.

I guess there is no need to wait 8 weeks?

Jim
