SW Ohio | Oak Island, NC has been our repeat beach destination. It is not built up with commercial stuff, just condos/houses along the beach. We like it here because it is nice, but not manicured tourist-crazy Myrtle Beach. The grasses grow up and it overs more for the wildlife. We have seen dolphins close every year, lots of different birds and watched baby sea turtles hatch and come out of their nest. We has also seen tracks made by a turtle to her nest early one morning. They fence around each nest and there are volunteers that come and keep watch on each nest when they are about to hatch to ward off crabs, foxes and birds until the babies get in the water. They welcome others to sit with them in the evenings and early part of the night. Really neat experience. I have family that go to different Outer Banks and there is one island that still has wild ponies. | |
